Top 30 Australian Songs Countdown

In March 2017, we re-energised the concept of the Untypical Radio Top 30 Countdowns – an opportunity for Neil to present his 30 favourite songs in a particular category. He started with the Top 30 Songs of the 1960’s and in May 2017, we present his second countdown – the Untypical Radio Top 30 Australian Songs.

Let us be very clear – this is so incredibly difficult to do, given the amazing array of wonderful music that has been recorded by Australian artists but we’ve done it. It is very much HIS OPINION – there’ll be some songs in the list that will surprise you and others that will surprise you by NOT being there. The key criterion is that, unless the song is quite a stand-out song, it will have charted nationally at some stage between 1960 and now – at this stage, there are only two songs in the countdown that failed to reach number 40 on the national charts.

Below, we have listed the twenty songs that Neil felt were most unlucky to miss the cut and below that, you can see the thirty songs that made the countdown.

For the record, our reference on chart positions, etc is The Book: Top 40 Research by Steve Scanes and Jim Barnes.

We are looking forward to sharing the list with you. Who knows, one day we might even present the list, song by song, on the wireless.
